know that dogs have the ability to accurately sniff out certain types of cancer?

According
to an article in Science Daily, scientists believe that chemical compounds created
by certain cancers circulate in the body, and are expelled from the body
through odors in the breath and stool, among other things. [1]

Recently, a
study was conducted in which a specially trained labrador retriever performed
over seventy sniff tests over the course of several months. Each test had five breath
or stool samples from five different patients and volunteers. All of the
samples were from patients and volunteers with varying stages of bowel cancer
and bowel polyps, some malignant and some benign. The dog was able to accurately
identify which samples were cancerous and which were not. In fact, when it came
to detecting the cancer in the breath samples, the dogs were 95% accurate
overall. With the stool samples, the dogs had an accuracy rate of 98%. [1]

This is
amazing news for the medical world. Although dogs will not be used in
day-to-day cancer detection, this amazing discovery does mean that certain
odors given off by certain cancers in the body can be detected with sensors that
work much like that of a highly trained dog’s nose. [1]

It is
always exciting to hear news like this. When man’s best friend can include “man’s
lifesaver” on its resume, we all benefit.

If you
would like to learn about the cancer study in its entirety, please read the

Pets
cuddle with you on cold nights, stick by your side when you aren’t feeling
well, and keep you company at times when you’re feeling lonely. A pet is a
special friend that always seems to know what to do in any situation.

Another thing that we also like to consider is that our pets
can be quite the little entertainers. They may not be able to tell a joke, or
put on a whole comedy routine, but those little guys (and gals) really do know
how to lighten a mood.

No matter how many times they may wake you up in the middle of the night with their sad little whines, or chew on your favorite pair of shoes, those cute little ones can do no wrong.

Eventually, that carefree feeling that you once had towards your puppy’s mischievous behavior wears off, and you are left wondering how you could have ever fallen for those infamous sad puppy eyes. What you probably didn’t considered is the reality that you just may have created a pint-sized terror. Trust us, your home won’t know what hit it. That is why it is important to start your puppy’s training process as early as possible.

For the sake of your home’s flooring, and for your own piece of mind, one of the most important things that you will need to do is housebreak your puppy.

There are many ways to housebreak your puppy, but two things must be present, consistency and rewards.

Consistency

It is important to remember that a six- to eight-week old puppy should use the bathroom every one to three hours, so setting up a bathroom break schedule and sticking with it is a must. Eventually, your dog will fall into a routine, and their bodies will naturally be able to predict when to go potty outside. [1]

Rewards

Rewards can come in many forms. There are the tasty kinds, treats, the fun kinds, toys, and the loving kinds, praise. Over time, your puppy will link the behavior with the reward, and repeat that behavior in order to receive more rewards. [1]

In your efforts to housebreak your puppy, please remember that no puppy is perfect. One day it might rain, seemingly with no end in sight. The next day, there's no sign of there ever being rain to begin with. No matter whether it’s wet or dry outside, however, there has been one common theme this season. It has been COLD!

Not only do we, as people, suffer from the effects of dipping temperatures, but so does your pet. That means roughly 40 to 45% of the adults in the U.S. are starting their New Year’s Resolutions, which were made in the days leading up to midnight, January 1, 2011.

If you are one of the 40-45%, your goals for the year are more than likely already covered. But what about your cute little pet? We’re sure that there are some pet-related resolutions that they would like to see you carry out in 2011.

QPet Supplies would like to save you the trouble, and quite possibly the embarrassment, of asking your beloved pooch (or feline) what they would like to see carried out on their behalf this year.

Here are some suggestions for having a happy and healthy 2011 with your pet:

Exercise. Besides being a great way to keep your pet healthy, exercising is a great way to share some quality time with your pet. Depending on what type of pet you have, and how big your pet (specifically dogs) may be, the amount of exercise time needed may vary.

Health Check-ups. Your pet should receive a checkup at the veterinarian, regularly, to make sure its overall health is in good condition. Skipping visits to the vet could lead to severe problems in the future, so do you and your pet a favor.

Good Nutrition. Your pet’s body is a machine, and food is the fuel. Your pet requires the best fuel possible to keep it running smoothly. Poor nutrition could lead to an unhealthy pet.

Good Grooming. It is important that a pet be washed and groomed regularly. Luckily, some pets do not require much attention in this area. A bath once every month, and regular brushing should suffice. It’s important to keep your pet’s coat clean and untangled.

Love and Attention. Despite what some may think, pets are more than just property to most people. Pets require a little TLC (tender loving care) just like anyone else. Plus, the best part about a pet when it comes to TLC is that they are warm, fuzzy and love to cuddle. Something that benefits both you and your pet.

Sources:

1. It’s in their nature to want to play and investigate. Of course, their curiosity isn’t just limited to your limited edition tree ornaments, and your hanging tree lights.

You also have to worry about the beautiful, yet dangerous, holiday plants hanging around your home. The most popular holiday plants that may make your pet ill are poinsettias, mistletoe and holly, and the biggest shocker of all, your Christmas tree.

Can you believe it? So, what can you do about it?

As far ornaments are concerned, it is always important to make sure that your Christmas tree is securely anchored down, and your electrical cords are tucked away.

You can also plan your Christmas tree decoration layout with your pet in mind. You can keep your delicate, glass ornaments towards to top of your tree, and your plastic, nearly indestructible ornaments towards the bottom. That way your pet is not at risk of being harmed by broken glass.

When it comes to toxic decorations, it is important that your pet’s interest in those plants be monitored. If you see that your pet has developed a desire to mess with your decorative plants, you will need to keep them in a place where your pet cannot reach them, or keep them out of the house altogether. A compromise might be to keep artificial holiday plants and trees in your home instead. This will ensure that your pet stays healthy, and your home stays festive.

For more information about poisonous holiday plants, please read this article about Poisonous Holiday Plants .

We at QPet Supplies would like to thank you for reading this post, and we wish you and your pet a happy and safe holiday season

Sources:

Russell, Douglass.
