10 Travel Tips

10 tips for a safe and happy trip for you and your small pet

Spring is right around the corner (believe it or not).  For those of us who live where there is lots of snow, spring can’t come soon enough.  And now is a good time to start thinking about travel.  It’s never been a better time to see any of the 50 States with your dog or cat.  More and more hotels have a pet friendly policy, and in cities across the country there are restaurants that welcome not just you but your four-legged companion.  There are plenty of destinations that offer attractions that both you and your pet can enjoy.  But before you head off by car or plane, here are 10 tips to make sure your trip is happy, fun, and safe.

NO. 1 - Visit the Vet… before you leave, to make sure your pet is in good enough shape to travel and that all vaccinations are up to date.

NO. 2 – Make sure you have a sturdy leash and collar with ID tags including your pet’s name, your name, your cell phone number, and proof of rabies shots (for dogs).  Avant has a fantastic line of leashes and collars.  All colors, sizes and designs.  Each is made of only the finest materials.

NO. 3 – If you’re traveling by car, get your pet familiar with the idea by going for short drives.  To prevent motion sickness have our pet ravel on an empty stomach (but have plenty of water handy).

NO. 4 – Make frequent stops to let you dog exercise, take potty breaks, and get lots of fresh air.

NO. 5 – Check with your airline well in advance of your trip as rules about pet vary.  Your pet will need to be in a carrier that meets airline standards.  And it’s best to book fights with pets months ahead of time, as there may be restrictions on how many animals can be on any given flight.  Avant makes a variety of wonderful carriers.  From high fashion hand bags to sturdy utility styles; each provides the comfort your small pet deserves.

NO. 6 – Don’t plan on traveling by bus or train.  Amtrak and most major bus lines don’t let dogs or cats (other than service animals) travel.  Cruise ships have different policies, so contact yours way ahead of time.

NO. 7 – Try to keep your dog’s routine as close as possible to what it is at home.  Take the same food and try to feed him/her at the same times.  If he/she doesn’t have a crate, bring an old blanket or towel to create a designated sleeping area where you are staying.  Avant makes some really cool beds that can be packed for travel also.

NO. 8 – Check in advance with your hotel.  Some are pet-friendly but don’t allow large breeds.

NO. 9 – Clean up… Make sure you clean up after your pet; that way you will help keep places pet-friendly for all that come after you.  Carry a four-to-one mix of water and white vinegar in a spray bottle to remove stains and smells after indoor accidents.  Don’t leave your dog unattended in a room, and try to keep him as quiet as possible.

NO. 10 – Keep your dog leashed wherever possible.  A new environment will be full of tempting sights, sounds, and smells and a leash will help curb his desire to explore and keep him from getting lost.

Keeping the above 10 things in mind will insure you have a wonderful travel experience with your favorite four-legged pal.
